TO WEAR FACE MASKS OR NOT TO WEAR FACE MASKS - Was that a question?

Post by MPN-MATE Admin »

Hi everyone,

I have to Post this because I believe that safety should be our prime consideration. However, there is the rub too...

At the present, supplies of face masks are basically non-existent, and to suggest that now we should all be wearing them might induce further unwanted ugly scenes of people challenging each other for their own procurement etc...

Never the less, in this rather utilitarianism existence of serving the needs of the greater good, I do wonder whose perspective might eventually triumph? Those who need a mask, or those who want the money from selling them in a time of monopolised demand?

Yesterday, I found a young Indian guy selling exposed surgical masks at $2 a pop in a Service Station, I simply mentioned in passing that were no longer any good because he has exposed them to the environment etc... :o :?

These are really interesting times we are all living through today...

Stay safe & well...

Steve

Time to encourage people to wear face masks as a precaution, say experts
by British Medical Journal

It's time to encourage people to wear face masks as a precautionary measure on the grounds that we have little to lose and potentially something to gain, say experts in The BMJ today.

Professor Trisha Greenhalgh at the University of Oxford and colleagues say despite limited evidence, masks "could have a substantial impact on transmission with a relatively small impact on social and economic life."

The question of whether masks will reduce transmission of covid-19 in the general public is contested.

Although clinical trial evidence on the widespread use of facemasks as a protective measure against covid-19 is lacking, at the time of writing increasing numbers of agencies and governments, including the US Centers for Diseases Control and Prevention, are now advocating that the general population wears masks, but others, such as the World Health Organization and Public Health England are not.

Some researchers argue that people are unlikely to wear masks properly or consistently, and may ignore wider infection control measures like handwashing. Others say the public should not wear them since healthcare workers need them more.

But Greenhalgh and colleagues challenge these arguments and suggest that in the context of covid-19, many people could be taught to use masks properly and may well do this consistently without abandoning other important anti-contagion measures.

What's more, they say if political will is there, mask shortages can be quickly overcome by repurposing manufacturing capacity—something that is already happening informally.

They conclude that it is time to act without waiting for randomised controlled trial evidence.

"Masks are simple, cheap, and potentially effective," they write. "We believe that, worn both in the home (particularly by the person showing symptoms) and also outside the home in situations where meeting others is likely (for example, shopping, public transport), they could have a substantial impact on transmission with a relatively small impact on social and economic life."

In a linked editorial, Babak Javid at Tsinghua University in Beijing and colleagues agree that the public should wear face masks because the benefits are plausible and harms unlikely. And they say cloth masks are likely to be better than wearing no mask at all.

As we prepare to enter a "new normal," wearing a mask in public may become the face of our unified action in the fight against this common threat and reinforce the importance of social distancing measures, they conclude.

In an opinion piece, researchers recommend that health care workers should not be caring for covid-19 patients without proper respiratory protection, and that cloth masks are not a suitable alternative for health care workers.

Wear a Face Mask or Not.
Personally as a Registered Nurse RTD I have been wearing a Face Mask from the beginning in UK..
Primarily to protect others, if I should be carrying any Bacteria / Virus etc..
Having MF, PV AXSL1 Mutation and the obligatory ET ,”the starting point” I hope to give myself a fighting chance with Covid19

I refuse to have my daughter’s or son’s do my Grocery Shopping..
Yes I’m more susceptible to Covid etc, however Covid19 doesn’t discriminate about Age..
My adult children have children of their own to care for etc..
I am Not Prepared to put my family in harms way to protect me/us..

So I wear a mask to the Supermarket once a week, as said I don’t wear Gloves personally as it simply serves to protect me !

Everything I touch with gloves on, I transfer to everything else I touch, as does the Cashier.
I wonder exactly how much Bacteria is passed along through a shift working or indeed by me, if I was wearing Gloves..

If I pick up any products and return to the shelves, I use Antibacterial Gel on my hands.
Personally I try very hard to simply pick up only items I want..
Thus reducing the handling of goods, and knowing I am not transferring millions of microscopic cells on Latex Gloves or similar simply to protect myself !

Masks to me are quite different and at least I hope gives me and those around me even just 2 mtrs apart a fighting chance..

I have Not had a Online Shopping Opportunity in the UK, like Gold Dust :-)
For me I shop at Waitrose they have disposed of the majority of trolleys for now..

They have 32 Trolleys available and once all 32 are in the Supermarket, we wait in line for a freshly cleaned trolley to become available..
32 customers in the store makes it easy to keep distance of 2/3 mtrs.
There is a ‘ Give Way’ system operating by shoppers themselves..

Other well known Supermarkets are allowing far more shoppers into their stores and unfortunately some members of the public have Zero Idea of Social Distancing..

Take Care All, Stay Safe.

Hey Maria... :)

Yes, I know you are a nurse and have been doing all of this stuff all your life... We should all pay close attention to your advice in this regard...

Our supermarkets are now much the same as what you have described, although... they were slow to get themselves properly organised all the same...

Yes, I shop for myself & my Octogenarian mum, as you know... she is more and more immobilised these days... I will no longer take her down to the shopping centres. At least not for the moment as she is more fragile than she will admit etc...

I always use a mask & always scrub up before and after my shopping adventures, of course...

Stay safe & well Maria... Hi to Sarah & Ken...
